DR. PHILIP JOBSON

ABOUT US

In the late 1960's, the Chairman of the Department, Dr. Phillip Jobson established the Visiting Professor Trust. Dr. Jobson is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty Of Anaesthetists, Royal Australian College Of Surgeons. This Faculty became The Australian & New Zealand College Of Anaesthetists in 1992 and it's crest is shown on the PROGRAM Page of this website.

The First Visiting Professor to the RPA Hospital's Department of Anaesthetics was Professor E.M. Papper in 1969. He delivered a series of superbly prepared lectures on subjects ranging from uptake and distribution of anaesthetic agents, muscle relaxants, medical education, training and research in Anaesthetics.

Every three to four years, donated funds raised had enabled the Department to host an overseas anaethetist. From the first Lectures presented by Professor Papper the guest list has included distinguished visitors to the Department of Anaesthetics at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital whilst it was Chaired by Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetics - Professor Douglas Joseph.

In December, 1992 the Department of Anaesthetics appointed a new Nuffield Professor of Anaesthetics and Chair, Professor Arthur Barrington Baker, formerly of Dunedin Hospital in the South Island of New Zealand where he held the position of Head - Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Otago University.

Since the recommencement of the Jobson Visiting Professor Continuing Education Program in 1997, it has become an annual event on the Australian Anaesthetic Program, with corporate Donation assisting in  providing world renowned specialists to the Australian Anaesthetic Community and assisting us in hosting a very successful Symposium with around 220 delegates attending our one day event .

In 2005 we celebrated our JUBILEE 75 Years of Anaesthesia at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a 2 day Symposium, closing with a spectacular celebratory event at the Great Hall University of Sydney which also marked the retirement of Professor Barry Baker.

In 2006 Professor Peter C A Kam was appointed as the Nuffield Professor and Chair & has carried on the tradition of the Jobson Visiting Professor Education Program for the past 10 years.

At the completion of the 2016 Calendar Year Professor Peter C A Kam will be starting on his journey to a much deserved retirement. Peter has been the integral component in keeping the Education Program of the Department progressing. A committee has been established to oversee the Jobson Education Program into the future.

The 2017 Annual Jobson Symposium marks a milestone as it is our 20th Consecutive Year as hosts of the Jobson Visiting Professor Education Program. Our new committee members are trusted with projecting the Jobson well into the 21st century. The committee consists of Dr Michael Paleologos [Director of Services], Associate Professor John Loadsman [Senior Staff Specialist], & Dr Timothy McCulloch [Senior Staff Specialist].

Our history continues:

In 2020 Professor Robert Sanders was appointed as the Nuffield Academic Chair.

& will carry on the long tradition of the Jobson Visiting Professor Education Program with the dedicated assistance of the Head of Department Associate Professor Nicole Phillips, appointed in April, 2022.

2020, 2021 & 2022 were 3 years in history, with challenges our generation has never experienced, many learning choices crossed our path to possibly teach us all a valuable life lesson, never take tomorrow for granted, praying that the hardest times are behind us and we can all look forward to a more sustained normality.
